About Peter Feehan

Peter is a Wellington born Musician who has been playing piano since the age of seven. Developing valuable playing experience in pop and Jazz as a performing Musician since 1982. After Years of experience in the popular music world of Wellington, and New Zealand Peter moved to Melbourne Australia to experience the Australian music scene.

Working as a professional Musician in Melbourne Australia from 1987 – 1994. I enjoyed performing regularly around the venues of Melbourne and Victoria. Teaming up with the Australian Musicians, I managed to be involved in a great deal of composing and recording. A very fulfilling stage of my career was being able to perform original compositions in the venues of Melbourne and hearing my own songs on the radio. It was in Melbourne Australia that I started teaching regularly and learnt how much I enjoyed teaching. So much so that I joined the Victorian Institute of Registered Music Teachers.

Upon returning to NZ I Tutored at Whitireia Community Polytechnic for five years Taking composition, Band combo classes, professional studies, and keyboard classes. In 1998, after successfully completing piano performance and theory exams, I was admitted as Licentiate to Trinity College of London, LTCL.

Peter teaches music in his private studio here in Hataitai Wellington.
Many styles are explored including Jazz, Pop and classical repertoire. The skill areas of theory, composition, performance, and improvisation are explored.
Exams are available (for those who wish to do them) and are now in many formats to suit the student’s taste.

There is a fantastic room and piano to work with. Peter’s philosophy is for the students to have fun exploring their music. This enhances the learning and great results are achieved
.
Serving on the committee of the IRMT NZ (Institute of Registered Music Teachers NZ) since 2014 has enabled me to provide many opportunities for my students. Through out any year there are performance festivals, master classes, tutorials and even conferences.
Students have often enjoyed these events as much as he does.

His piece “Back and Forth” made it in the IRMT NZ 2022 book of pieces for Violin/ Cello with piano accompaniment called “Easy tune for Tamariki”. Approximately up to a grade 2 standard. Over 100 scores were submitted and of these scores twelve were chosen for the book.
In 2023 my book of piano works called “Hataitai Garden “ was published by SOUNZ, centre for New Zealand Music, Toi te aropuoru. This book contains 10 scored piano pieces ranging in difficulty. These works are unique in that they include many opportunities to improvise in place of what has been written in the score.
